Geodetic survey mark 8118

This is a close up of the top part of geodetic survey mark 8118: one of many scattered across New Zealand. He's very handsome (in a rugged sort of a way) and has his own personal web page. The geodetic system provides a network of co-ordinates for surveying, mapping and emergency services. So, 8118 has a very important role to play in the security and safety of the citizens of New Zealand. As you can see - if you go large - some citizens have signalled their affection for 8118 by carving their names delicately into his wood.

Took this shot with a new TradeMe purchase: a vintage S-M-C Takumar telephoto 135mm f3.5: on the GF1 this is effectively a 270mm telephoto lens ;-)

There are some earlier shots of 8118 taken with my trusty point and shoot here.
