Sundial, missing the gnomon

. In the garden of the lighthouse on Auskerry. I noticed a similar one at the lighthouse at north Graemsay. Both lighthouses are by the Stevenson family. I posted a picture from the High Lighthouse on 11th May.

There isn't a scheduled ferry to Auskerry. I was on a trip orgnised by the Scapa Flow Somethingorother. Unfortunately, while the rest of the UK had a sunny day, Orkney and Shetland were under pretty thick cloud. It was misty and with a flat, featureless sky. As you can see. The sea was very calm, though, and we all looked for Orcas that have been reported here. i don't use the term 'killer whale'. It was coined by whalers, who had a bit of a nerve describing the whales as killers. The orca are predators and they're hardly unusual for being so.
Anyway; no luck at all. No doubt I'll read reports online of plenty seen elsewhere.
More pictures from the day here.

There is a shipwreck on the shore nearby, so much for the lighthouse. It is of the SS Hastings County which foundered during fog in 1926. It was en route from Hamburg to Montreal carrying a cargo mainly of toys and teddy bears!
