Ride to Shopping in Calgary

This morning I rode Calgary's light rail transit system to the center of the city, where I shopped at the department store now known as The Bay. It is descended from the Hudson's Bay Company, which was incorporated in 1670 and has served Canada's growth over the 340 years since.

Calgary, a fast-growing city of about 1.2 million, is the adminstrative center of Canada's oil industry. I worked at the University of Calgary for three years in the 1970's and the city is almost unrecognizable in comparison to that era. The person reflected in the train's window is not untypical of the city's population--over 12% are from China and South Asia.
