North of Hadrian's Wall

We had a wonderful walk today, the whole route was north of Hadrian's Wall. The views here are stunning - so wide open and dramatic. In this image you see some of today's walkering group on the right, and on the left, you see the dramatic escarpment of Peel Crags, Steel Rigg and Highshield Crags, with Crag Lough nestling beneath them. The Crags are all part of the famous whin sill, an intrusion of igneous rock that runs from Holy Island off the east coast of Northumberland, all the way to the Giants' Causeway. Amazing.

Hadrian's Wall Trail runs along the top of the crags - another excellent walk. I think you appreciate the defensive nature of the Roman's chosen site only by walking north of the Wall and looking south.

Here's hoping the good weather lasts all week.
