The Edge of the Wold

This is an alternative view of Arnside Tower to the one that features on postcards of the area. If you want to see a more contextual picture, click on the link.

It is an example of a Piel Tower, a fortified building from the 12th century, constructed as a defence against the marauding Reivers from the Scottish Borders.

The building is in a very tumble down condition, and there seems little hope of it being stabilised against further collapse, let alone being rebuilt. Much of the fallen stone has disappeared and some can be seen in dry stone walls nearby, and some is known to have been used in not so distant times for construction of buildings.

Pity I couldn't find a cow with an 89.

I've posted a couple of pictures of an Angle Shades moth trapped this morning, see link.
