The Edge of the Wold

Golden River

The last day in the deep freeze...for now.

It's thawing fast as I write this. But in early afternoon, the River Kent below Kendal was still coated with ice, and this was catching the golden light of the sinking sun. Brokenbanjo (that most erratic of blippers) and I had escaped from work for a lunchtime walk along the river. On the way we saw our first bramblings of the year, huge numbers are being reported from Grange and elsewhere in the county, a reflection perhaps of the extreme weather.

This morning I stopped to photograph the estuary at Sandside. It was an Arctic landscape with ice floes sliding downstream in the slow current of the Kent channel. This provoked the usual blipping dilemma. It's such an unusual sight to see, yet this is the second time this year that the estuary has become an icy wilderness. But to see the River Kent frozen and bathed in golden light is extraordinary too, so it becomes the blip. I have posted one more pic of the tke River Kent and two of the estuary here.

Afterthought: this is untouched by Photoshop.
