UMass: Scarves for Sale

This is the Student Center in the middle of the campus of the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. (It's fun to view LARGE.)

I was there for the final lecture in the physics course on light and optics that I've been auditing--it was fascinating to the end. This concourse is under the multistory building which I blipped early on, and which serves mainly as a hotel. It's a spacious underground area with a number of places to eat and various stores.

The long painting on the left is titled "The Opening of Massachusetts Agricultural College," UMass's name at its founding in 1863 as a land-grant college. It became Massachusetts State College in 1937 and was promoted to full University status in 1947--a typical progression in American higher education.
