Haydon Old Church

After giving Mum a lift to chapel this morning, I drove to the old church of Haydon Bridge. Like the "new" Anglican church in the village, the old church is also dedicated to St Cuthbert. It is said to date from 1190, although it would need to be earlier if St Cuthbert's bones rested here en route to Durham Cathedral.

The church is small, built on a small mound in the countryside high above the new village and surrounded by the old graveyard. It is approached via a tunnel created by yew trees. The views over the South Tyne valley are good and it's an atmospheric place to visit.

I was unable to find the key holder at the cottages 1/2 mile away, so had to content myself with outdoor photos. Then it rained! Back in Haydon Bridge the sun came out, with it a rainbow, but is was all over in about 15 minutes.

Here is an HDR image of the church using a wide angle lens.
