Space Dreamer

In Grey Lynn is a most unusual shop. At the moment it is the site of a show (or exhibition) of the works of Andrew Palace a local artist. This is his shop, and in the area behind the shops he has his workshop. He works with metal to make lamps, almost always with the theme of "Jules Verne meets 2001: A Space Odyssey meets organic", as he says. His aim is to make a lamp that is "an object in its own right", and permanent enough to last so that "in a hundred years someone would still own some of [his] lamps and they would still be in good condition".

The difficulty of taking a photo through a dusty shop window, which has also been scratched by the taggers in one place, means that this picture has many imperfections. However, in keeping with the artist's aim of producing lamps with ambience, I think that is visible from this picture.

Interested visitors can see some of his works here.
