Wednesday walk from Bardon Mill

BW had devised an excellent walk today from Bardon Mill. I think he must know every square inch of that area. It was very varied. Sadly so was the weather. We set off in sunshine but we could see the black skies ahead and the rain came at lunchtime. By then we were at the Shepherds' Memorial up on the moors.

We passed through a farmyard where the farmer had collected some interesting artefacts. There was the large stone base of a mill wheel on one wall. Around the corner was a stone that had been used as a cheese press. He had found a round(ish) ball from a Roman canon perhaps. Then in a dry stone wall he had included this piece of stone found on the farm land. Fascinating. (Nearly forgot the enormous jackdaw nest in a barn.)

We also passed the place where, in autumn 2003, 4 intrepid local walkers agreed to walk together every week on Wednesdays - and so the Haltwhistle Walkers were born.

Came home damp but happy from a lovely day (not even spoilt by a trip to the supermarket....)
