Swimming Against The Tide

Another Place

Wow! What a day!

We had originally been planning to go to Liverpool for the weekend and to stay over and amble home on Sunday, but, since the Wonderspouse is very low on energy and also wants to be at home because he's concerned about his mum's health at the moment, we decided to go for the day!

So, it was an earlyish morning for a Saturday, with a weekday-style breakfast. We left home at around 8.30 and had a smooth journey up to Liverpool, where we parked in a car park I'd used on a previous visit, cutting through the Bluecoat arts centre (which the Wonderspouse thought would be a good venue for poetry readings), and then heading off to meet the FABULOUS @NovaWildstar from twitter - who's been a brilliant online friend for ages now and who I've really wanted to meet in person!

She was absolutely LOVELY in person. It was so wonderful to be able to talk to her properly, face to face, without typing or wondering if the internet would crash or waiting for twitter or facebook to catch up with the speed we were sending messages. She also has the loveliest voice with a soft north-west-coast American accent blended with English overtones from the years she's lived over here (this is the sort of thing you simply cannot get from typing or looking at pictures on facebook)! It was great to meet her after so long, and she's definitely my new Liverpool best friend - really hope we can meet up again soon! Thank you Nova! :-)

After dragging ourselves away from well over 3 hours of constant conversation, the Wonderspouse and I went to visit one of our favourite Merseyside attractions - Another Place by Antony Gormley, where I took this picture. We've been here before a few times, and just love these figures (casts of Gormley himself) looking out to sea!

From there, we went to visit some friends in Blundellsands - an old college friend of ours (who was best man at our wedding) and his wife. It was lovely to see them, and we really mustn't leave it so long next time - it's really lucky that he married such a lovely girl and we get on really well with her too. We sat chatting in the garden until it was too chilly, and they cooked us a lovely dinner, including a brilliant trifle with oodles of custard! Yummy!

Then we departed, again at about 8.30, and headed back through the Liverpool suburbs and out to the motorway. It was quite a lot of driving to do in one day (320 miles), but we got home, safely, shortly before midnight, and were greeted by a small hedgehog which was curled up on the doormat catching forty winks!

Then it was glass of wine, bath, bed and sleep. A long day, but a wonderful day! As I type this, the next morning, my brain is still a bit foggy after a long day with so much excitement, but it was very well worth it.

We'll be back to Liverpool very soon I hope. There's so much in the city that the Wonderspouse & I would like to explore, it would be great to see our friends in Blundellsands again soon, and I REALLY want to see my new best friend on Merseyside VERY soon! :-)

By the way, there are a few more photos from the day (and from the Wales trip at the beginning of the week) in the blipfoto extras album, which you can get to by clicking here!
