Thursday: Vukovar

The Balkans War, or, as it is called here, the Homeland War, is still fresh in people's minds.  People deal with it differently.  For some, it is something that they can't forget.  For some, while they may not forget, they look forward to the future and put the past behind them.  I work with a number of colleagues who were directly affected - one is a Serbian refugee, another fled Dubrovnik when it was being shelled, his wife and child having left before him.

Outside my office, there is a memorial to Vukovar, which is one of the most well-known, and saddest, names from the early 1990s.  The memorial is covered in tags, all bearing names and dates between 12 September and 16 September 1991.  Their rustiness seems to add to their poignancy.
