Diary of an Edinburgher

A two-cafe day

We had a walk across the Links to try out the other cafe in Polwarth. Archie did his usual 'Come!' game, which is immense fun. He really runs back and forth as fast as his wee legs can carry him. Until he gets tired of the game and veers off to eat some mud instead.

He's conveniently forgotten all about 'Heel!' and pulled constantly on the lead the whole way. Very tiring, not to say annoying, to have to keep stopping and making him sit. He sits and looks up guiltily, then as soon as we set off again - woosh- he's out in front pulling again. For a while I had him flummoxed when I walked really close to the wall, so he had to walk behind me.

We tried the new (to us) cafe. Very busy. He just would not settle, though he was quiet. The staff gave him a bowl of cut up sausage! I popped it in my treat bag - he'll have it later, cut up into tiny bits as treats over a couple of days. Very kind of them though.

We went next door to the cafe we found last week, where he lay down and relaxed as he is suppose to, so we could have a long sit there. It wasn't busy, plenty of space, with Beach Boys and Paul Simon on the soundtrack. If they have to have muzak, that's not too bad. Dog friendly owners too - biscuits and pats and chatting about the puppy they are getting soon.

A person in a wheelchair came in and we noted that he didn't bark - 'Look! He knows the difference between a wheelchair and a pram,' I assured JR.

Er... No. The person in the wheelchair came over to look at the cakes on offer, and he started barking! Our signal to leave. He gets excited anyway when we put coats on, as he knows we're moving at last, so even more barking. He's very loud.

This photo was taken just before he blotted his copybook and we had to make a hurried exit.
