Tonopah Mining Park

A glimpse into the past
when silver mining brought a
boom to Tonopah

~ carliewired

We kept it a low key day with just a trip to the Tonopah Mining Park and a quick tour around the town.

The Tonopah Mining Park has preserved the history of the silver mining boom in this location. Several mines concentrated in this area with a big production of silver about 100 years ago. The discoveries and the mining brought a certain prosperity to the state of Nevada. It was interesting to learn about the personalities involved and how they affected change in their times. The park has about 100 acres holding the mining history of the area.

Our drive around the town of Tonopah was a little discouraging. I'm guessing that real estate prices must be rather depressed. There were many little old houses that were in the derelict category. Many homes were surrounded by decades of cast-off vehicles and other junk. There were the occasional well cared for home, but these stood out as exceptions. Many businesses, even some on the highway, had been closed and abandoned. This was not a place I would care to live in. Tonopah needs a great injection of capital and civic pride.

**** Very, very poor internet service here....I will catch up with you as I can!
