A POIGNANT DAY

We went to a Service of Remembrance today for Trish, a lovely lady we have known for about 35 years, from when our boys and her son were in Cubs together.

Trish was a lifelong friend of another good friend of ours, and although we didn't see her that often, whenever we saw her, she was always very friendly and as mentioned in the service, always smiling, despite having to cope with a terminal illness diagnosed the day after she retired a year ago.

It was a great service, with wonderful singing and the church was full;  testament to her deep faith and the love and respect in which she was held, both in the community, at the local hospital where she worked and further afield in other aspects of her life.

We went to a local garden centre afterwards and I thought it was rather poignant that these two clematises were entwined - the beautiful pink one is named Princess Diana and the white one is Princess Kate.

Mr. HCB and I chatted about this and the sadness of that situation - we felt that Diana would have been a loving and caring Grandmother to the little Princes.  This in turn reminded us of Chris, a lady in our church, who died last weekend - her only grandchild was born six months ago, so she was able to enjoy him and spend some time with him, despite the fact that she, too, had been diagnosed with a terminal illness.

As we were reminded in the service, Christians are not immune to accidents, illness or tragedy, but the one thing that we ARE sure of is that our strength in these situations comes from the God who made the universe and He is our guardian and protector, whatever we go through in our lives.

I look up to the mountains;
    does my strength come from mountains?
No, my strength comes from God,
    who made heaven, and earth, and mountains.
Psalm 121 : 1-2
