On the Naming of Rabbits

This charming little rabbit is Binky Bunzini, whom you have met before on these pages. I took this photo during a quiet moment in the yard on a summer evening, while my husband was sitting peacefully with the bun near his feet. I thought that the bunny looked a little bit like a tiny cow, sitting in the middle of a field. (My husband's big white Crocs - his bunny feeties - are just to the top right, outside of frame.)

There is a second bunny you have not met yet, a quiet, shy bunny who stays under the hedge and won't come out. While Binky clearly earned its name through the bunny binkies (happy jumps) that it made when we first met it, naming the second, unseen, bun was much more difficult.

So we solicited help from our Internet friends, and we were rewarded with the following suggestions: Flower, Honey, Bitsy, Bashful, Luca, Beasley, Bonny, Houdini, Bunzinga, Bumper, Zeppole, Braveheart, Tiny, Little, Ittybitty, Flopsy, Mopsy, Thumper, Blinky, Buttercup, Shadow, Batman, Twinky, and Bunky.

We had so many good suggestions! Say each of these with the family name, which is Bunzini, and you will give yourself some happy giggles! I myself was quite partial to several of these, but these are my husband's bunnies, and so he gets to choose. (And the name must be one that rolls mellifluously off the tongue, of course.)

In the end, my husband picked the name Sneaky for the seldom-seen bun. We do not know genders yet, so it just might be a Sneaky Pete if it's a boy. We also think of it as a sort of Shadow Bun because it hangs out in dark places. I knew all about cats and how tough it can be to name one. But who knew the naming of rabbits could also be such a difficult task!?

The song to accompany this photo of a bunny who already HAD a name (Binky!) is Jim Croce, with I Got a Name.

P.S. Some of you who have been following these bunny tales have not yet learned the latest good news: Mini Bunzini  (mother of Binky Bunzini and Sneaky Bunzini) is alive and well, and she put in a brief cameo the other morning! Hooray!
