We Are Here

When we first arrived
it was all crossed wires
and no-go areas.

The language was a problem
but we understood the signs.

Later
they stuck us in a tiny flat
with one little window.

It’s in a block
close to a tatty pub.

We’ve never had a drink there.

We’ve gradually got to know
our neighbours
and listened to their life stories.

Their tales are much the same
as the ones we tell.

And their hopes and dreams.
And their fears.

And their questions.

How the hell
do we get out of here
is the one most often asked.
