The Candidates

At the Democratic Club table during the White Elephant Country Fair Days in Green Valley, Arizona.

Maybe it should be the Senator and the Beginner?

Our State Senator makes campaigning so look easy.  She knows how to approach her constituents and engage in conversation. She understands how important each person is in her survival to represent them.  The first time candidate to the State House seems to be taking a good lesson from her.

Being a good candidate is an art.  People don't like to be pushed or bullied into talking to them.  They like to be "romanced."  They want to feel like they are the important person in the conversation.  The good candidate, and ultimately, the good public servant not only makes them feel that way but always puts them first.

But candidates must always be prepared to lose.  This State Senator lost her bid for the legislature twice before finally being elected.  She had a goal and each time she lost she learned something new...about the electorate, about campaigning and about herself.

We don't know what is in this young man's future.  Is he committed if he loses his first election?  Does he have a steel backbone and thick skin? Can he learn from from the world now that he is out of school?  Win or lose, kudos to him for trying where most won't.

Today I pay homage to the CANDIDATES.
