A survivor

This is the Chinese Mission Hall which was built in 1905 by the Anglican Church, at a time when Haining Street in the Te Aro area was the centre of Chinese settlement in Wellington. (I found some information about that aspect of Haining Street's history on a web site and am seemingly unable to link to it. If I can solve that I will add the link.). The information included a tale about an immigrant from England to New Zealand murdering a Chinese man because he objected to "aliens" in his country, and believed that murder was the way to make his point. Found not guilty on the grounds of insanity, he kept escaping from the psychiatric hospital to which he was committed.
In recent years the building was used by MenzShed Wellington City for its meetings and to assist men to do blokes' things. However, the building has been declared at high risk of collapse in an earthquake, and in consequence is locked and unused.
Yet the building which until not very long ago housed the offices of the Medical Council of NZ, and was damaged by the recent big earthquake which hit Wellington, is still permitted to be used, despite not having been upgraded to the minimum standard.
I can see no evidence (from the outside) of significant damage, and being just two levels, less harm would come to occupants than those  in a 14 level tower block might expect. We moved our offices to ensure staff safety, being unhappy with the casual attitude of the owners of the building.
