Yorkshire Monsoon!

To say it's rained today would be an understatement. It was raining when I woke this morning and was just about stopping when I ventured out at around 5pm. In between it has poured down in bucket loads and the streams and the roads have run like rivers, tearing up road surfaces, collapsing walls and generally doing lots of damage. (And of course because of the financial situation and the excessive cuts to our councils budget by our Westminster/ Home Counties focused government, it would seem there will be no money to pay for repairs!)

This is C's garden - fortunately she had sandbags from the last time it flooded so the water didn't get into her kitchen (the water had been running at a much higher level during the day as the rain teemed down). The other photo is of C taking her dog for a walk along the public footpath (her garden is just the other side of here - the side we cannot see. Think of the force of the water to rip apart the stone wall in this way!

Once the rain had stopped it was amazing how quickly the water began to subside and by the time I returned from my walk the flow through C's garden had definitely reduced. Our hilly location mean that the run off is immediate whereas those further downstream will be suffering the consequence for days to come. Let's hope that there are less problems than the flooding of 2006 which led to great areas of our towns being consumed by flood-water.

A few minutes ago the sun was out and it seems as though the evening was going to end well. Let's hope it does for everyone around here.
