The Circle of Nature.

Returning the nutrients of dead wood to provide food for the next generation of trees and plants is a fascinating process. We often see the prime agent, fungi, at work. But there are large numbers of other things involved such as bacteria, beetles, wood lice and slime moulds to name but a few. Most of these do their work unseen.

It was the muted colours and shapes which attracted me to this decaying piece of wood on top of Arnside Knott.
