A time for everything

Early evening by Windermere

Monday
We had a fairly early start this morning to drive Jen to the airport for her flight back to the States. Then we returned to Janet and John's, finished our packing for the week, and headed up to the Lake District for a few days. We arrived about lunchtime and decided to do a walk starting in the village of Elterwater. We enjoyed a nice pub lunch sitting outside - Roger's Ploughmans looked wonderful, I wished I'd had it! Our walk took us first along the river, then along the shore of the lake, and then to Skelwith Force, where the waters of the infant River Brathay are narrowed between rocky outcrops and sent tumbling over a rock ledge. The walk continued into Skelwith Bridge and then through woodland to a scond waterfall Colwith Force, which drops in several stages down a total height of about 40 feet, splitting into a double spout in its lower reach. It's setting in beautiful woodland was quite delightful. By the time we had finished our walk it was late afternoon and time to go and check into our guest house in the small village of Near Sawrey, famous for being the location of Hill Top, a 17th century farmhouse which was the home of Beatrix Potter, author of the delightful Peter Rabbit books. The guest house where we were staying apparently features in a couple of her books. Having checked in and had a cup of tea we went down to the shores of Windermere (the quieter west side). It had turned into a gorgeous late afternoon and evening and we just had a stroll about in the beautiful evening light, soaking in the surrounding beauty. Had a great dinner at a nearby pub, then back to the guest house.
