U-Bahn München: 70/100 Odeonsplatz (U4/U5)

Munich underground: 70/100 Odeonsplatz (U4/U5)

Today's entry in my series is the lower level of Odeonsplatz underground station, which is a stop along the U4 and U5 lines. Here the U4/U5 tunnel crosses the old U3/U6 tunnel, which also has a station here of the same name. Originally Odeonsplatz was not supposed to be an interchange station. Therefore the path between the U3/U6 platform and the U4/U5 platforms is somewhat long and narrow.

The lower level of Odeonsplatz underground station was opened in March 1986, when the U4/U5 tunnel was extended here from Karlsplatz (Stachus) in the west. It was the terminus of the line until 1988, when Lehel station and the eastern extension of the U4 opened.

Like its eastern and western neighbours, but rather unusual for the Munich underground network, Odeonsplatz U4/U5 station has two separate platforms in separate tunnels. These are connected by three passages - one at each end and one near the center. There seems to be a green-to-white gradient from Karlplatz (greenish yellow), through Odeonsplatz (dark green-white), to Lehel (bright white).

The next two stations will also be interchange stations with two separate levels for their respective lines.
