Common Yellowthroat (male)

Common yellowthroats (Geothlypis trichas) are New World warblers, with only the male sporting the black mask you see here (Marylee calls him the Lone Ranger). They tend to be found near water, most often in wooded areas. We saw this one with its mate on their breeding territory in Maine, although their young have certainly left the nest.

It was a good morning for warblers, especially with the summer so advanced. We were guided by an expert birding friend from Northampton around his country house. The other warblers were a blackburnian, several magnolias, black-throated green, and black-throated blue (fleetingly).
