Lindisfarne Castle

It was a beautiful spring morning as we set off down the A1 – bright sunshine and after yesterday’s wind, it was very calm.  Not long after setting off the rain started and the gloom descended.  We reached our destination of Holy Island just as it was safe to cross the causeway, and it was amazing how many cars were already in the car park.  Our first stop was lunch.  The first place we tried had an ill chef, so wasn’t serving food.  The second place was much more promising and TT was delighted with his really big scotch egg!  Many years ago we walked the St Cuthbert’s Way, which ends on Holy Island, and we realised that this was the same place we had had dinner in, all those years ago.  We walked to the castle in the drizzle and gloom, accompanied by the howling of seals on nearby rocks.

I really like the castle, as it is so sturdy, yet so homely in a 1930’s kind of way.  After the castle we wandered round to Gertrude Jekyll’s garden, which was quite bare, but with a few signs of life, before heading back to the village.  It was too dreich to bother with the Abbey, so we continued on our way to our holiday cottage.

Once we were settled we sent TT out in the rain for fish and chips and settled down to watch DVDs – first of all BB and TT watched Back to the Future, while TT and I then watched Dancing on the Edge once BB was in bed.

Here is a view to Lindisfarne Castle through the gloom.
