Pity the poor Dragon

Once again the "English" day, where a Turkish-born Roman soldier who in all probability never ever set foot in Britain beheads a marauding dragon in an oft-lauded but unsubstantiated allegory of pagan suppression by the emerging Christian empire. Hail St George! :-)

The Mummers were out across the land, and this is Wotton under Edge in Gloucestershire. Here, bold King George marches the poor defeated dragon away for a beheading almost at my very feet. I was in danger of being splashed by dragon blood! And yes, this is English eccentricity at its very best - we even have Father Christmas in the scene!

I enjoy St Georges Day for all sorts of reasons, but perhaps most importantly because one can see the flag of England paraded about the place, for once, with no connotations of racist politics or even football... But I always want the dragon to win.
