An ordinary life....

Happy Birthday Mum...

Today you would have been 76 and our day would have gone like this...

You and John would have arrived here at midday (we would have been expecting you nearer 1.00pm but when you were coming to see Alan you could never wait to come and would set off whenever you were ready, regardless of pre-arranged arrival times :-)

On arrival you would dump a huge carrier bag full of goodies on the kitchen table - shortbread, homemade chocolate mint cake, chocolate buttons, whilst telling me of your disbelief at gaining a pound this week at Scottish Slimmers.  "I don't understand it Di, I've been really good this week.  Have you tasted that new Cadbury chocolate bar? It's lovely."

Next you'd make a beeline for your favourite boy, shouting his name and making him squeal with delight before he'd even clapped eyes on you.  Gran B's in da house!  :-))   Smother him in kisses before singing your way through the repertoire of songs that you know will have him in stitches.

We'd have gone to Gloagburn for lunch where you would have praised them for their decent coffee and  fact their soup was served piping hot then afterwards, whilst wandering through the farm shop, you would have picked up a packet of biscuits, looked at the price and exclaimed "How much?!  Daylight robbery!" in a big loud voice.  Then bought them anyway.

Back home to spend more time with Alan, laughing, singing more songs (rude ones this time!) and talking a load of nonsense about whatever daft topics you and Alan fancied.

Dinner at ours,  "Oooo that's delicious Di, you must give me the recipe" as you shook salt on your food like snow, killing any delicate flavour.  The ceremonial blowing  out the candles on the birthday cake "just a wee bit of cake for me please" followed by, "that was lovely, I'll have another wee bit.  I hate waste."  :-))

Then time for you and J to head home.

The leaving routine would take a while as you could never tear yourself away from Alan.  At least ten "final kisses" and hugs for D and me, as you head out the door saying, "I'll be on the phone Di."

You didn't celebrate enough birthdays mum but I am truly thankful for the ones you did.
