Stairway to Heaven

Gladys looked around from her new front door with a satisfied smile.

It had taken some doing to persuade the other chickens to move out of their rented accommodation of last week and raise their sights to a more uplifting, compact bijou residence. ‘A step up,’ she thought, but obviously wasted on Tallula Tufty and her bestie who were reluctant from the outset to live in high rise accomodation, regardless of the creature comforts.  Her mind swiftly passed over the trauma of the previous evening when Magpie decided to make a run for it and was grabbed unceremoniously by the tail and bundled into bed. ‘What was that all about?!’  She certainly valued her tail feathers more than that. The youngsters in the old coop had no intention at all of wending their weary way up the stairs to bed and had to be lifted in the dark up onto their perches just to get the hang of it all. They wouldn’t listen to her! ‘Oh but they will soon enough,’ she thought. ‘They will learn who’s boss!!’ and with that she turned tail back inside ready for a quiet nap and blissful dreams of the promised parcel of mealworms hopefully winging their way in her direction shortly.
