Gillipaw's Journal

By Gillipaw

Cloisters, Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire

Founded in early 13th century by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, it became the home of William Henry Fox Talbot. He was the pioneer of photography in Britain, developing the calotype.

The Cloisters area has been the location for several Harry Potter movies.

The window in the extras was the subject of the very first photographic negative. Taken in August 1835, it was the result of Fox Talbot's experiments with light and chemistry to fix an image on paper. His motivation to experiment was that he wasn't very good at drawing.

We really enjoyed our visit here, so much to learn about the history of photography.
