Dunnottar Castle

We left Aberdeen this morning and called in at Dunnottar Castle on our way south.  The castle ruin is in a spectacular setting on an impregnable rock jutting out from the cliff.   Dun is a Pictish word meaning place of strength and the name probably means 'fort in the low country'.

The castle was the home of the Earls Marischal and it has a dramatic history, more of which is here.

We took a walk along the cliff to get a view of the castle and then descended down the cliff and up the walkway into the ruin itself to explore.  It's an amazing place.

The drive home was long and tiring so now it's time for bed!
