I spent the morning sorting out photos and back blipping a few entries from the Gobi last week. In the afternoon I went to the district museum. My guidebook describes it as the best museum in Mongolia. It’s not! The national museum in Ulan Bator was much better. Two rooms were closed – perhaps they were the best rooms! What I did see appeared to be a random collection of items, some bronze age others modern, a few with captions in English, most without. The 1980s set of paintings of different torture techniques were an odd inclusion, there were some assorted things that had belonged to the first Mongolian cosmonaut and a large collection of possessions, including an old mobile phone and compact film camera, belonging to someone who’s a complete mystery to me as all the information was in Mongolian! The museum is inside a former monastery so the buildings were interesting and the two recently restored wooden buildings had these lovely colours and intricate decoration. But the guidebook definitely oversold the museum!
