The Old Goods Lift

I press the brass button and the winch motors spring into action as the old goods lift slowly ascends from the depths of the building.  The bells rings and I slide open the metal lattice doors and step inside the dimly lit elevator car.

Although it's almost 80-years old, the goods lift with its battered wooden panels is far more reliable than its modern glass and aluminium cousin which lives in the public area of the library in Huddersfield.

Sadly, the old girl is due to be retired on safety grounds as the open lattice gates no longer meets EU safety standards.

The lift, which is surrounded by a stone staircase reminds me of the old American films of the 1930s, 40s and 50s.
