But, then again . . . . .

Nature in the Raw.

If you are of a sensitive disposition, I would suggest you leave this Blip. It does not make pleasant reading.

Nature isn’t kind, it has no end of life care, and no hospices where wild creatures are eased off their mortal coil in a pain-free fashion. We have devoted a significant portion of our lives to caring for both wild and domestic animals in one way or another and, presumably, this jackdaw has been one of them as a regular visitor to our feeding station,

I first noticed him trying, not very successfully, to feed himself from the fat-ball dispenser, but he soon gave up and climbed to the top of the structure, hunched his shoulders against the rain and appeared to try and sleep. His feathers are unkempt, and he seems unable to open his right eye; he won’t see much out of it anyway. His other eye is visible in the extra and appears to be one large ulcer, and there’s nothing we can do for him. There is little doubt that he is cold, hungry, and in pain. He was eventually disturbed by something and flew off but we have no idea where or how he landed.

I’m afraid he’s unlikely to survive the night but will probably die of a combination of hypothermia and hunger being unable to either care for his feathers, forage or find a safe place to roost. I find it a deeply upsetting thought.
