Taking Stock

The second day of National Mills Weekend so it had to be another windmill. This is in Stock, Essex and the remaining one of three that stood on the site.

I enjoyed a spirited drive along the A414 then turned off into single track lanes. The Essex countryside was looking particularly beautiful with lacy sheep's parsley waving on the verges and wonderful dappled sunlight through the young leaves in the tree tunnels. I used the satnav for the final bit of the journey and ended up in the middle of a housing estate.

The mills stood on common land which has since been sold for housing. I had the same trouble as I had with the first mill yesterday - trying to get an uncluttered view of the structure. The guides in the mill were lovely and friendly. I had a lot in common with the man on the first floor who is a pilot and owns a vineyard.

Today's poem is Thankyou Note by Dannie Abse. http://www.dannieabse.com/dannie.html (One needs to scroll down for the poem.)

"Behind every great man is a great woman." :) She did the punting and the wood chopping! Dannie Abse was spoilt. :)
