Bringing John Muir home...

This is a backblip from last night when I was late home after a reception at the Scottish Parliament, organised by the Central Scotland Green Network to launch an initiative to raise awareness of the famous Scottish conservationist John Muir in 2014, the centenary of his death. Muir was born in Dunbar in East Lothian and migrated to the USA as a boy where his subsequent wandering, exploring and nature writing made him famous and led to the birth of the US's National Park movement. More famous in the USA than in his homeland, the campaign will raise his profile back in Scotland, timed to coincide with the launch of a major coast to coast long distance trail to be named in his honour in April 2014. The photo shows well-known mountaineer, broadcaster and writer Cameron McNeish who gave a sparky speech on Muir and on Scotland's long distance walking routes. I think the backlighting makes him look rather saintly!
