On the Roof (Day 3)

Today I removed the entire sheet metal roof on one side of the house. It was trickier than I thought it would be (it always is) because the large sheets of galvanised metal were heavy and unwieldy, and not easy to deliver to the ground in a controlled manner.
The old roofing underlay was broken in many places at this end of the roof, which may explain the slight leak that has been bugging us for years but which I am now dealing with! A couple of the boards were really rotten. When I hit them with the crowbar it just went through. Fortunately most of the planks were sound.
The roof was attached directly to the planks with no intervening battens. This is not good practice and I'll be using a lot of battens! They have to be fairly close together when the roof can get 2 meters of snow lying on it.
However, today the snow was not the problem; it was the sun! It beats down onto the roof, and reflects back onto the worker. On top of that the actual roof gets hot.  Frequent pauses for icy cold water were needed, as were frequent rests in the shade.
All-in-all a good day. The roof is bare and ready for the next stage. No rain is forecast but just in case the whole roof is covered in a giant tarpauline.
Onwards and upwards!
