"Come and get it!"

Dear Diary,

I have been trying to train Philomena and Rudy to come when I ring the bell on the back porch to call them for dinner.  I have been only partially successful at best.  Philomena comes about 50% of the time, Rudy comes when he feels like it, independent lad that he is.  Still, I am hoping it catches on.

At the house where I grew up there was an air horn that was used to call farm hands in for lunch.  My grandmother use to sound it when it was time for us to come in to wash up for dinner.  Now, I guess, parents just ring their children up on their cell phones!

When I stayed with my friend in town we had another signal.  The fire house sounded a horn at 8:05 each night.  It was the curfew horn.  Don't ask me why it was 8:05 and not 8:00 but you were supposed to be off the streets by then if you were under 16 years old.  Imagine doing that now!

Another hot day and I've decided to go to Rockland on Saturday with Rebecca ("Auntie" Rebecca to Emerson) and our friend Olga.  I thought it would be much more fun to have a ladies outing for the day and the weather looks good.  We will be back fairly early, no need for horn to calls us home!
