My topsy-turvy life

Science in action

Late night last night as I nipped down into town after finishing work to join the Staffordian congratulations party for laura's sister and new brother-in-law's wedding. So despite staying in bed for ages this morning I was still knackered and not really looking forward to coming back into work again this afternoon.

So as I did nothing blipworthy this morning I decided to attempt some actual chemistry at work.
This is the old reagents we used to use for measuring calcium in your blood and consists of o-cresolphthalein being dropped into an alkaline buffer solution. If there was any calcium present it would bind to the o-cresolphthalein to form a purple complex...hmmm maybe I could try that next time...
I liked with this that you can see the droplet just above the solution and the previous one still mixing with the buffer, just.
