The first day back home was fine, grass cut, things sorted a bit. A lovely autumn day. We were about to set off for a walk before dinner when Doreen's neighbour called to say that they'd just been around to her house to find it had been broken into overnight. Doreen has been staying with her other daughter in Edinburgh while we were away.

We rushed up to find that the French door had been smashed and three rooms turned over. Fortunately we think very little had been stolen as precautions had been taken before she went to Edinburgh. Whoever broke in didn't touch any of the electricals.

The police were called and an emergency glazier to board up the door. Forensics came too but could find no real evidence. There's just the cost of repairing the door and the time to put back everything that was pulled out.

More than that though, what effect will this have on Doreen? People say that it's the knowledge that someone has broken into your house which is much more disturbing than anything. We haven't told her yet, we're waiting until just before she gets home.
