Fishy business

A different kind from yesterday's. A pleasurable and varied day today. This is the market in Almuñecar where we bought lunch. The fish section is amazing, with so much spankingly fresh fish at unbeatable prices (the numbers here are prices per kilo -- it's up to you to figure out what the fish are). We bought a slice of emperador, an alternative name for swordfish as far as I can tell, and lunch was pan con tomate, smashed avocado on toast (I've only just cottoned on to this, and I'm a fan), ensalada tropical made by S, and barbecued emperador with peperonata.

In the afternoon we went to La Herradura to view a flat for a potential future stay (yes, we have got hooked on this area). It's up the hill at the far end of the beach, in an apartment complex. We really liked it, very spacious and light. And cat-friendly! Very important. Note to SooB: we stopped for tinto de verano at El Chambao de Vicente on the beach.

In the evening we went to the English film at la Casa de la Cultura: A United Kingdom. It's a true story about the immediate post-war history of Botswana (then called Bechuanaland). We really enjoyed it -- I had absolutely no idea about this fascinating story of a black tribal chief who met and fell in love with a white English woman in London in 1947, married her, and brought her back to be his queen, causing considerable political ructions. The chemistry between lead actors David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike was excellent, and there was a good balance of romance and political action. With a surprise appearance of a young Tony Benn defending the rights of Seretse Khama in Parliament.

And surprise! We met guiri and F at the film, after not seeing them for a couple of weeks. After the film we repaired with them to the buzzing Francisco I for wine, tapas, and much discussion about a wide range of topics. By the time we tore ourselves away much wine had been consumed and the place was nearly empty -- a rare event. A good day!
