Isaac's Tea Trail

Today the long walk was from Nenthead to Allendale on part of the Isaac's Tea Trail. Isaac Holden, b 1804, used to walk across the moors carrying tea to sell to householders in these remote parts. He had been a lead miner who had to find alternative employment when the mine he worked in closed.

Isaac was from a poor background. He was fired by his religious convictions and became something of a philanthropist, raising money for good causes. He sold photographs of himself to raise funds for a secret venture. He was saving to buy a hearse to allow poor folk some dignity in death.

He also founded a saving's bank and had a well dug in Allendale.

His is a remarkable story and it was good to remember him on today's walk.

There was hardly a breeze on the top as we walked over the moors. The light was sadly rather flat and there were no clouds, so the photographer was not happy, but the walk was a delight from start to finish. Here is a walker enjoying the sun.

Tomorrow it's the Geology walk and rain is forecast. Never mind, the weather is set fair for the weekend.
