Geology Walk

Here is Elizabeth Pickett, Geologist with the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, who was the expert leader for today's walk. From Coanwood we explored the South Tyne Valley, starting with the rocks in the river under the Langley viaduct. People found some excellent examples of fossils here.

We visited an old whin stone quarry, hidden in the woods by the old railway line and walked on the Pennine/Maiden Way with long views of the valley. Rain joined us at 1.30 but we were soon back down in the valley bottom with the wind behind us, for the second half of the walk. We loved the oak and mixed woodland on the east side and enjoyed the views from the top of the viaduct on our way home.

Elizabeth makes wonderful illustrations to aid her talks and has written an excellent book called Reading the Rocks about the Geology of the North Pennines.

I could not get into Blip last night due to new security but I'm in again today. It's very frustrating not to be able to post when you have a Blip addiction......
