I Learned Something New

Tony made a statement the other day that all citrus fruits have ten sections.

Because I didn't get a blip early in the day, I had to come up with something. I was going to take a picture of the sections of a clementine in some very artistic way. Much to my surprise, there were only nine sections. Hmmm, I must cut a lemon and see how many sections it has. There are ten!

My next step was to go to the computer and see what I could find out about this mystery. At Reddit.com, this is what they told me: "The segments of the fruit are derived from a part of the flower called the carpels. The carpel is pretty much the female reproductive part of the flower and contains the ovules. That's why each section of fruit has seeds (assuming you didn't buy a seedless variety). The number of carpels that a a flower has is species specific but will always be a multiple of 3, 4, or 5."

Now I have consumed a clementine, I have lemon slices for my water tomorrow and I now know how the segments of citrus fruits are determined.

I am grateful that I have my blip uploaded because it is way past my bedtime! Good night!
