Ohio River at flood stage, Part 2

Sunday
On Tuesday I posted a collage of shots of the flooded Ohio River in downtown Cincinnati. The river crested Tuesday at around 56 feet, then began to recede. However, it then began raining again, Wednesday through Saturday, culminating with record rainfall for the date yesterday, about 2 1/2 inches I think I heard! So the river has been rising again, supposedly cresting tonight four feet higher than Tuesday’s level, at 60 feet, the highest the river has been since 1997. As Roger wasn’t with me onTuesday, he was interested in driving down there this afternoon to see for himself. We started our walk at the same place as I did on Tuesday, at the entrance to International Friendship Park, but today we walked across the “Purple People Bridge” to Newport Kentucky and continued our walk on the Kentucky side of the river, before returning to our car, and driving across the river to the neighbourhood of Covington, where my blip was taken. I was standing in a small park, which is normally several feet above river level. The statue represents Simon Kenton, an early frontier explorer, and beyond you can see the street light and trees marking where the road usually is. Along the river to my left and right are some beautiful riverside homes, currently surrounded by water. To the left, you can see the blue Roebling suspension bridge, and to the right across the river the expanse of red just under Simon Kenton’s arm is the Great American Ball Park, home of the Cincinnati Reds. The Cincinnati side of the river has been designed with flooding in mind, and much of what is underwater is park land, with some roads and a number of parking lots under water, but it is a different story for the outlying river towns to the east, the hardest hit probably being the riverfront town of New Richmond, where much of the town, including homes and businesses, is under water. Further south yesterday in Kentucky and Tennessee there were even a couple of tornadoes. However, according to the forecast, we should now have a couple of dry days, with mild temperatures and lots of sunshine! Fingers crossed!!
