Alnmouth

This morning it was action stations to pack the car in readiness for our journey to the north east for a short holiday to show Tomas and Marketa a different part of the country. The journey was straightforward until the Catterick junction when a combination of a flooded road and road works slowed the journey for some time.

Just as I pointed out the ‘Welcome to Northumberland’ sign we decided to turn in to a service station, big mistake. We should have seen this from the rubbish in the car park! It was the BurgerKing from hell! Suffice to say we used the loo and quickly left.

Our plan was to take a break at Northumberlandia to see and walk on the amazing earthwork ‘Lady of the North’. Unfortunately, the visitor centre and the cafe were closed - not an auspicious start to our trip, and it started to rain but we did enjoy climbing up to the head of the Lady and then down her body! She still had snow in her cleavage!

From there we drove to Alnwick and spent some time in Barter’s Bookshop. The bookshop is in the old Victorian Station and they have a very good ‘station buffet’ with yummy thrice cooked chips.

A visit to the supermarket for essentials and we drove to our very comfortable Airbnb in Alnmouth. There was a welcome package of wine and chocolate and home made cake to greet us. Marketa and I decided to take a walk down to the shore and this is where I caught the last of the light over the estuary. A perfect end to the day!

Tomorrow, Hadrian’s Wall!
