PABST....

....one word is all it takes to bring visions of summer, baseball games, and an ice cold beer!!
Milwaukee was, at one time, the self-proclaimed "Beer Capitol of the World", & it was the Germans who started it all! By 1880, German immigrants made up 27% of the city's population, and when they came they brought beer halls, beer yeast, and the know how to make beer. Milwaukee was the perfect place to do that, as it had almost unlimited supplies of wheat, as well as the abundant water from Lake Michigan. Frederick Miller, Joseph Schlitz, Frederick Pabst and Valentin Blatz; these 4 men represented the biggest breweries in town. Pabst was one of the first to use advertising to sell his beer, and over the years they all became accomplished at it. The advertising obviously works, as while I have trouble remembering names of people I've just met, I can tell you the slogans of all 4 beers from the commercials I saw when I was small. Miller Brewery still brews it's beer here, and also brews Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, having bought the rights to the name and the recipe.
This sign hangs above the street in the middle of what used to be the Pabst Brewery Complex. This area really fell into disrepair in the late 60's, early 70's, but in the past 5 or 6 years it's seen a real resurgence. All of the buildings in the complex are being repurposed. The building to the right in my picture is fully completed, and there are apartments and condos on the upper floors, a restaurant and bar on the lower. The building to the left is slowly having the brick that was used to board up the windows removed, and renovations are starting for, I believe, a hotel.
Wisconsin has the rather dubious honor of being the 7th drunkest, most beer drinking state in the Union......we blame it on the Germans! Haha!   Thanks to Nickimags888 for hosting MonoMonday, and her theme of "words"!
