Fat Rascal.

Mum and Dad arrived today, and rather excitingly brought treats from Yorkshire with them - a cake shaped like an owl for me and a Fat Rascal for M. Both of these lovely cakes came from Betty's Tearoom, which I miss greatly in Aberdeen. Fat rascals are kind of like a cross between a scone and a rock cake, decorated with glace cherries and almonds; perfect for people like M who don't like over-sweet things. On the other hand, my owl-shaped cupcake was a gorgeous sweet mix of marzipan and chocolate - mmmmh.

This morning I was completely unable to sleep beyond 7.30am; which is still an hour later than I usually get up for work, so I lay in bed for two whole hours reading my Kindle: total bliss. When M woke up we had a cooked breakfast and did a very quick tidy of the flat before heading out to Screwfix and then Sainsbury's for some bits and pieces for the flat and some foody items. We also managed to drop some of the piles of cardboard to the tip AND put up some toilet-roll holders; a very (exciting) productive morning!

Mum and Dad arrived later in the afternoon to have a look at the new house, and were suitably impressed. They brought us some lovely gifts: a tablecloth, napkins, flowers and candles with candlesticks. We managed a cup of tea and a snack before I started getting the dinner ready; we had Moroccan-style butternut squash and chicken with feta cheese and cherries, followed by black velvet cake (inspired by the cocktail with chocolate and Guinness) with cream. We ate with M's Mum and Dad, and it was lovely to sit in our dining room on our new/old dining chairs and have a civilised meal at a table greater than two feet high (despite having to borrow cutlery from M's Mum and Dad as we only have four of everything...).

We stayed up late drinking red wine, eating M's Mum's macarons and catching up, before realising we'd dirtied every single glass in the house (quite an achievement) and heading to bed.
