Celebrating Jane's life

Today Mum and I went to Falstone, a tiny village on the edge of Kielder Water, for Jane's funeral. Mum and Jane met through embroidery and I then met her. She was a lovely person who was always interested in other people. She had cancer for several years, but played down her symptoms and got on with life. (I would love to think I could do that in similar circumstances.) We heard that she would leave her wheelchair outside the oncology department so the staff would not think she was too unwell to have more chemo!

It was the most beautiful day. We drove north through Wark and Bellingham. There are daffodils and narcissi along the roadsides in great swathes. The fields are full of ewes and lambs, looking so much healthier than a week ago.

The church was full, with an overflow of people in the churchyard, listening to the service through a loudspeaker. For once, I thought the service was first rate. The rector is Susan Ramsaran. She gave an excellent address and made it relevant for the younger grandchildren too.

We were able to celebrate Jane's life together and be glad we had known her.

The WI put on a splendid spread in the village hall too!
