A SECRET PLACE

We crossed the field
     towards a gate
          and walked over
a small bridge
     that led into a copse
          of beech trees

Primroses
     violets and bluebells
          blossomed
               in profusion
the silence
     punctured only by
          the snap of feet
on fallen branches
     and a robin
          singing sweetly

Uprooted trees
     leaf mould and
          mossy bark -
nature’s own sculptures -
     delighted our
          various senses
of sight
     smell and
          touch and then
we heard the
     blue tits
          and chaffinches

What bliss to find
     such an oasis
          but it will be
               our secret
so that we can
     visit again
          to be refreshed
               and renewed
by the beauty
     the silence and
          the sounds
               of nature.

P.S.  I have put a tree stump sculpture in as an extra.
