Denver Union Station

Marc left his car with the valet outside Denver Union Station and the four of us sprinted through the belting rain to the newly renovated terminal filled with shops, restaurants and the Terminal Bar pictured here. (OilMan commented that he thought that was a rather inauspicious name....)

We had a delicious and artistic dinner at Stoic and Genuine, a seafood restaurant with surprisingly good seafood for a landlocked state. After dinner we said farewell to our wonderful hosts and retired to our room overlooking the station platform. A room which John was told when he went to check out had already been paid for. When he tried to transfer the bill to our credit card he was told that there was a note on our reservation...’do not let customer pay...’

Our informative conductor on the train has guided us across the Rockies, pointing out the Moffett tunnel at the Continental Divide, the bright yellow Moffett one-room schoolhouse in the middle of a snowy plain, antelope, deer and an American bald eagle sitting in her nest at the top of a huge cottonwood tree. We have walked, driven and flown across the Continental Divide, but this is the first time we have ever passed under it.

It was snowing hard at the high elevations and the snow covered trees as we emerged were pretty, but the visibility was practically zero, and my photos, taken out of necessity look blurry and impressionistic...

In the Gleneood Canyon we traveled along the Colorado River and the impressive ‘hanging highway’ that skirts it. The old highway has been turned into a bicycle and walking path along the length of the canyon. It must have been an exciting trip in an era when cars were far less reliable....
